A green education for kids prepares them for the future and gives them the tools that they need to make wise, eco friendly decisions.

It's never too early to start teaching your kids about the importance of going green. From a very young age, children can become involved in family activities like helping to recycle, caring for your compost pile, and much more.

It's much more fun to learn by doing, so here are some tips on starting a green education for your kids!

Encourage your children to turn off lights and water when they are not using them. Use this as an opportunity to explain where electricity and water come from and that you pay to use them.

A great way to teach your child about electricity and what it costs, while saving money at the same time, is to pick up a Kill-A-Watt electricity usage meter. You can plug any appliance in your home directly into the meter and you'll see exactly what an item costs to run each month or year. Kids can help to test different items in the home and can see how much they can help you save by unplugging items that aren't in use. Cool Tip! Ask your child to help unplug items that aren't being used, then decide what you'll do with the money you save.

Get Your Kids Involved In Local Activities

Encourage your kids to get involved in local activities that encourage green education and behaviors. Many communities have events that kids can get involved with. Encourage them to find a way to make a difference.

If you have a recycling center at home, put your child in charge of bringing items to it daily. If you don't yet have a recycling "center" at your house, make one together with your children. Start An Edible Family Garden

Start an edible garden as a family. This is a great way for children to learn about the earth and how things grow. It's also great exercise and a wonderful way to bond as a family. If you don't have a yard, grow a small herb garden right in your home.

When your child grows out of his/her clothes, have them help you sort through them. Pack up the clothes that are still good and take a trip with your child to donate them to charity.

Twice a year or more, go through your child's room with him/her. Pick out toys that he no longer plays with. Clean them together and then give them away or donate them to charity.

Encourage your child to take only what they can eat at meals. Explain about the importance of not wasting and talk about people who don't have enough to eat.

Put your child in charge of adding items to your compost pile. If you don't yet have a compost pile, make one as a family. Visit our section on composting to learn more about composting and to choose a method that will work for you.

Set aside one night every month that no one in your family watches TV or uses electricity. Have a candle-lit dinner and then read or play games as a family.

If you are able, walk or ride your bike with your child to school once a month or more instead of driving.
