Soap Nuts
Soap nuts | Natural laundry detergent or organic laundry detergent. Learn about this green product and were to get it
If you're looking for a natural laundry detergent that isn't going to cost you a fortune, but will work great on your laundry, then soap-nuts are just what you are looking for.
We know it sounds strange, but soap nuts are actually the fruit of a tree, aptly named the Soapberry Tree. It grows in places like India and China, and in those countries people have been using the fruit for cleaning for many, many years.
As people in the United States have become more eco-conscious, soap nuts have made their way here, and we think they're pretty amazing!
When you get soap nuts, they'll looks like, well, nuts. To use them in the washing machine, you'll place 4 - 5 of them in a cotton baggie with a drawstring to keep it closed. Throw the entire thing into the washing machine and wash as usual. You can reuse the nuts for about 4 or 5 loads of laundry.
If you'd prefer to use liquid soap, you can actually make your own.
Take 7 - 15 soap nuts and place them in a pot with 6 cups of water. Boil for 30 minutes, you should have about 4 cups of liquid remaining. Store in an airtight jar.
It's important to note that because this is a completely organic laundry detergent, it won't last as long as what you'd buy in the store. Make small batches at one time and use about 3 tablespoons per load.
You won't know until you try, but we've had wonderful luck with this very natural laundry detergent. Clothes come out extremely clean, with no smell.
In some loads that are EXTREMELY dirty, I have added a small amount of Seventh Generation laundry detergent to the load, but don't really feel I need it.
You probably won't be able to find this organic laundry detergent in your local supermarket, however you can get Soap Nuts here really cheap. Enough soap nuts to wash 800 loads costs only $45.00! That breaks down to less than 6 cents a load.
Compare that to almost 30 cents a load when you use Tide, and all of the sudden Soap Nuts start to look a lot better!
If you can't tell by now, these are one of our very favorite green products on the market today! As long as they keep growing trees, we'll be using these to keep our laundry clean!
